DAF System for Edible Oil Wastewater Treatment | 100–200 m³/day Oil Processing Plant Case Study

Case 2026年6月1日

Project Overview

A vegetable oil manufacturing plant specializing in the production of rapeseed oil, soybean oil, and other edible oils generates approximately 100–200 m³ of wastewater per day.

The existing flotation unit had been operating for more than ten years and could no longer provide effective oil and suspended solids removal. As treatment performance gradually declined, the customer sought a reliable upgrade solution to improve pretreatment efficiency and support stable operation of the downstream biological treatment system.

After an on-site evaluation of the wastewater characteristics and treatment process, our engineering team recommended the installation of one set of IDAF2-010 High-Efficiency Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) System. The equipment was delivered, installed, and commissioned successfully, achieving excellent treatment results from startup.

Wastewater Characteristics

The wastewater originates from edible oil production processes and contains oil, grease, suspended solids, and colored organic matter.

Influent Conditions

Industry: Edible Oil Manufacturing
Products: Rapeseed Oil, Soybean Oil, and Other Vegetable Oils
Daily Flow Rate: 100–200 m³/day
pH: Approximately 5.0
Appearance: Gray, highly turbid, and high color concentration
Main Pollutants:Free Oil
Emulsified Oil
Suspended Solids (SS)
Organic Matter
Prior to flotation treatment, the wastewater pH is adjusted from approximately 5.0 to 7.0–8.0 to optimize coagulation, flocculation, and oil separation efficiency.

Treatment Process

The wastewater treatment process is designed as follows:

Raw Wastewater → Equalization Tank → DAF System → Anaerobic Treatment → SBR System → Discharge

The DAF system serves as the primary pretreatment stage, removing oil, grease, floating solids, and a large portion of suspended solids before biological treatment.

By reducing pollutant loading in advance, the DAF unit helps improve the performance and stability of both the anaerobic reactor and SBR system.

Why DAF is Important for Oil Wastewater Treatment

Wastewater generated during edible oil production often contains large quantities of oil and grease that can negatively affect downstream biological treatment processes.

A Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) system is widely recognized as one of the most effective pretreatment technologies for oily wastewater because it can efficiently separate low-density contaminants that are difficult to remove through conventional sedimentation.

Key advantages include:

Efficient oil and grease removal
Significant reduction of suspended solids
Lower organic loading to biological treatment systems
Improved treatment stability
Reduced operating and maintenance costs
Compact design and easy operation

Treatment Results

Following commissioning, the IDAF2-010 DAF system achieved stable and efficient operation.

Performance Benefits

✔ Effective removal of free and emulsified oil

✔ Significant reduction of suspended solids and turbidity

✔ Improved wastewater clarity

✔ Reduced load on anaerobic and SBR treatment units

✔ Stable operation with low maintenance requirements

✔ Enhanced overall treatment efficiency

The flotation sludge generated during the process is automatically removed by the skimming system, ensuring continuous and reliable operation.

Customer Benefits

By replacing the aging flotation equipment with a modern high-efficiency DAF system, the customer achieved:

Improved pretreatment performance
Better protection of downstream biological treatment units
More stable wastewater treatment operation
Reduced maintenance requirements
Long-term reliability and operational efficiency

The project demonstrates the effectiveness of Dissolved Air Flotation technology for edible oil wastewater treatment and highlights the importance of efficient pretreatment in industrial wastewater management.

Conclusion

For wastewater generated from rapeseed oil, soybean oil, and other vegetable oil production processes, Dissolved Air Flotation remains one of the most effective solutions for removing oil, grease, and suspended solids before biological treatment.

The successful application of the IDAF2-010 DAF System in this project once again proves the reliability and efficiency of DAF technology for industrial oily wastewater treatment.
